Raising a superhero kid
written by Dennis Liu, illustrated by Jason Piperberg
PREMISE: Nicole,
raises her 7 year old son, Dion, who has superpowers. Life was hard
enough keeping up with the bills, let alone trying to keep track of her
son’s invisibility, plasma powers, and telekinesis. In order to study
his progress, Nicole films her son 24/7 with the help of her friend,
Pat, who is an aspiring filmmaker. But when Nicole starts to notice
mysterious men tailing her, and with Dion’s developing abilities
constantly changing and becoming more powerful, she must find the
courage deep within herself that she can raise Dion on her own.Indyplanet:

You know what I want to see more of? Post-Game godtier powers.
Give me a John who gets more airtime than should be possible when he jumps, who never gets too hot or too cold and can always tell when it’s going to rain or snow or bluster. (Give me a John who dreams of flying, who has to concentrate to keep himself corporeal, like if he stops thinking about having mass he’ll drift apart, unable to pull himself back together.)
Give me a Dave who can tell what time it is down to the millisecond, with infallible accuracy. Who makes split-second catches like it’s second nature, like time slows down for him before a crisis, who can fast-forward through any of John’s movies by speeding up his perception. (Give me a Dave who can’t stop hearing ticking. Who sometimes blinks and finds himself ahead or behind of where he should be, who can never be sure if he’ll wake up the morning after he fell asleep.)
Give me a Jade who can make any bag into a bag of holding by shrinking what she puts in it or making the inside bigger than the outside. Give me a Jade who can shrink herself at will to go on adventures inside terrariums, who could tell you where anyone is with pinpoint accuracy, who can show up on any of her friends’ doorsteps like it’s nothing at all, who never gets lost. (Give me a Jade who misses being able to wander, who feels trapped, confined, in her body, on this planet. Give me a Jade who feels purposeless without Prospit’s quests or the pressured trials of the game, who feels like nothing presents a challenge anymore.)
Give me a Rose who can still tell the most favorable outcomes of any decision. A Rose who is never in the dark, figuratively or literally. A Rose who never gives a wrong answer. (Give me a Rose overwhelmed by all the information in her head. A Rose who dreams of tentacles and ink and darkness and wakes up choking on her own tongue, who knows she shouldn’t be afraid of what she saw but can’t reason with her own emotions. Give me a Rose who can’t tell if she thinks people are individuals or pawns anymore.)
interrogator: say it

interrogator: *slaps me* say love triangles are interesting and add to the narrative. SAY IT.

In Mexico we kiss on the cheek greet each other all the time and I think it’s great and you guys should know about it a little more.
Like, there are rules. When you don’t really know someone you don’t kiss them. When you are first introduced to someone, you do. Girls and girls and girls and boys kiss-greet each other but boys like to act “macho” and just hug and low high five.
There is people you don’t like/know so much, or maybe you’re both in a hurry, so you just make a kiss sound with your lips wills you press your cheeks together. Then, there are friends who hug you through it, shortly and tightly, to show they missed you and they are happy to see you. Some people, usually if someone is interested in you romantically or just affectionately, make a point of actually pressing the kiss to your cheek but that is not really a regular thing. You notice.
When you arrive at a family or friend meeting, you are expected to go around the place kissing everyone on the cheek. Skipping or missing someone is considered very rude (like your aunt may stop taking to you rude). This happens even with less conservative people or millenials.
When people are sitting and a woman arrives, men are expected to stand up to greet her. Women bend for other women who are sitting. When a man arrives, he bends to kiss women and just shakes hands with the other men. Women are only expected to stand up to kiss a new comer if it is their elder, man or woman, or if they need to show respect to them.
Kiss greeting can have some rather awkward moments. Like glasses hitting glasses. Or someone being over enthusiastic and practically smashing their cheekbone against yours. Or (sometimes purposely) misplaced kisses that linger just at the corner of your mouth. Or that uncle’s scratchy beard. Or running into someone at the gym and one of you apologizing for not kissing the other because you are all sweaty and gross. Or pulling back from a kiss and explaining you are sick and don’t want to pass the virus to them.
Basically, this is a whole thing for people in Latinamerica, Spain, France, Germany (though Europeans make more than 1 kiss which can ensue some hilariously awkward situations when meeting Latinxs) and everyone in North America is missing it so I think you should know. For educational reasons or real life reasons or writing reasons.
Also, this whole thing happens all over again when kissing each other goodbye every time you leave a place, group of people.
